COI-NEXT Initiatives—Creating a Healthy World

(1) Checkup + Results + Health Education Done the Same
Day New Behavior Change Program Utilizing Leading
  Edge DX Technology,
  ”Self-Monitoring Style QOL Checkups”

With the current exacerbation of problems concerning social insurance fees, such as increased medical expenses, the expectations for preventative medicine/preemptive medicine that involves prevention and intervention before the onset of illness, are high. For this reason, this site, with the aim of supplementing traditional checkups and increasing health consciousness (health literacy), began a new behavior change program, “QOL Checkup,” that amalgamates the knowhow and expertise we had accumulated up to this point. One characteristic of this checkup is that we narrowed our focus down to four major areas: metabolic syndrome, locomotive syndrome, oral health, and depression/dementia. Another characteristic is the compact program package, which allows the health checkup to take place, the results to be conveyed, and health education concerning behavior changes to be provided, all within two or three hours of the same day.
COI-NEXT accelerates the DX of QOL checkups and pursues a new model that utilizes future remote/non-invasive technologies in addition to IoT terminals. We will expand this further to develop a self-monitoring style QOL Checkup program for not only healthy adults, but from infants to bed-ridden elderly people. Participants can effortlessly receive regular checkups at home in a fun and continuous manner, and are motivated to change their behaviors through health education. In the future, with contribution to several SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), particularly SDG 3 “Good Health and Well-Being,” in mind, we hope to grow not only within Japan, but out into the world while being centered in Asia. We have already started our expansion in Vietnam, and have visited local health and medical related government institutions, university research institutions, as well as Japanese businesses. Our program was selected by JICA as a “JICA Partnership Program (Grassroots Collaborative Support)” and in July 2023, we invited physicians from Hai Phong City Center for Disease Control to a training session on QOL Checkups. Using the knowledge we obtain here, we hope to expand to neighboring developing countries in the future.

(2) The Implementation of Health Care Digital Twin

The COI-NEXT Project will utilize the benefits of possessing real-world data and diverse big data obtained from the Iwaki Health Checkups to the maximum extent possible, and will continue to strive for the actualization of health care digital twin in the area of health care.
Health Care Digital Twin is a mechanism where all sorts of movements in physical space (real society) are sent in real time to cyberspace (virtual society) just by individuals living their daily lives, and feedback is then sent back to physical space from cyberspace. Health behavior change AI (artificial intelligence), points out interventions/improved pathways to better health in everyday life and throughout the whole life, which arose in cyberspace from the amalgamation of diverse data, and by doing so, illustrates a story about the pathway toward future health, or in other words, creates a “health journey.” The cycle making up the physical health journey begins in cyberspace when individuals receive feedback about simulations and interventions for optimal healthy lifestyle habits. We intend to create a health journey that unites cyberspace and physical space health journeys, in a way that allows participants to feel like they are playing a game while they enjoy their healthy lifestyles.

(3) Innovation Ecosystems Through the Introduction of PFS/SIB

The COI-NEXT Project aims for the creation of a model of a new society where health is the focal point that propels the economy, along with new industry, to develop the regional economy, and in turn, change the behavior of its residents to make healthier choices. With our project as a hub, and alongside participating businesses, regional financial institutions, Hirosaki City and Aomori Prefecture, we are involved in the creation of projects that will make the people of the region healthy. We are striving to build a health innovation ecosystem that begins in Hirosaki. To accomplish this, we have established a corporation with Hirosaki as the base, we are investing in and nurture startups, and are establishing a flow of funds system that includes social impact bonds (SIB)*1.

*1 PFS (Pay for Success)/SIB (Social Impact Bond) are a new public and private partnership (an outcome-based private commission contract system) that utilizes private funds to implement innovative programs to solve social problems, and which aims to use the program outcomes as funding for payment.
